Pinar de los Franceses

CHICLANA DE LA FRONTERA- Pinar de los Franceses - Cañada de los Arquillos - El Marquesado - Huertos Econatura

Discover a unique route that combines history, nature, and changing landscapes around Chiclana. This walk takes us through pine forests, farmland, and archaeological remains, showcasing the transformation of the environment throughout the seasons.

Itinerary Description

We begin the route on the scenic road of Pinar de los Franceses, a place named after an old French defense post from the Battle of Chiclana in 1811. We walk among pine trees and residential areas, whose streets are named after various species of birds.

We continue until we encounter the remains of the Tempul-Gades Aqueduct, one of the greatest Roman engineering works in Hispania. With its 75 kilometers in length, this aqueduct supplied water to the ancient city of Gades (Cádiz), and its springs are still in use today. Here, the landscape begins to change, and we enter the Camino de los Arquillos.

The trail takes us through groves, vineyards, and wheat fields, now a vibrant green that will soon turn golden with the arrival of summer. Wildflowers add color to the path, creating a vibrant picture of spring at its peak. We reach the Marquesado road and continue along a parallel trail, crossing the village until we arrive at an eco-natural orchard. Here, the locals cultivate small plots, creating a space for sustainable and community-driven agriculture. After the visit, we continue along a bike path, cross a bridge over the highway, and return to the Pinar de los Franceses, thus completing a route full of contrasts and natural beauty.

Urbanización Pinar de los Franceses

The name ‘Pinar de los Franceses’ comes from the fact that, after the famous Battle of Chiclana on March 5, 1811, during the War of Independence, the French established a defensive post in this area known as the Batería Colorada. Even today, a residential area we pass through bears a name that commemorates this historical episode.

Urbanización Batería Colorada

In Chiclana, each residential area chooses a different theme to name its streets: some opt for trees, others for cities, mountains, or even horse breeds. In the case of Batería Colorada, the names are inspired by birds. We step off the main road to peacefully stroll through its streets.

Restos del Acueducto de Gades

The Tempul-Gades Aqueduct was one of the largest Roman civil engineering works in Hispania, stretching 75 km to carry water from the Tempul springs to Gades (modern-day Cádiz). Built with local materials such as lime, brick, and oyster stone, it combined underground sections with arcades. Today, only a few visible remains remain, such as a stretch in the Plaza de Asdrúbal and a solitary pillar near the Pinar de los Franceses.
